Why Are My Cherry Shrimp Turning Brown? (Neocaridina Guide)
If your brightly coloured Cherry or Neocaridina shrimp are turning brown, dull, or clear, the primary culprit is almost always keeping a "Skittles" tank or allowing different colour lines to interbreed.
1. The Main Cause: "Skittles" Tanks & Cross-Breeding
Wild-Type Reversion: All vibrant Neocaridina varieties—Red Cherry, Blue Dream, Yellow Back, Green Jade, and Orange Fire—were selectively bred from wild-type shrimp that are naturally dull grey and brown.
Dominant Genetics: When you mix different coloured Neocaridina together in a "Skittles" community setup, they will cross-breed. The genetic traits for vibrant reds, blues, or yellows are recessive, while the wild-type brown/grey camouflage genes are dominant.
The Result: Within just 1 to 2 generations, offspring born in a mixed Skittles tank lose their bright parental colors and revert back to their natural brown, clear, or striped wild-type patterns.
2. Secondary Causes (Environmental & Physical)
While genetics from mixed-colour breeding is the main reason, environment can also play a minor role:
Light Substrate Camouflage: On light sand or bright gravel, shrimp naturally lighten their pigment cells to blend in, often appearing pale or brownish.
Pre/Post-Moult Phase: Shells can temporarily look dull or cloudy right before or after shedding an exoskeleton.
Water Quality Stress: Poor water quality or sudden parameter shifts cause shrimp to drop pigment intensity temporarily.
3. How to Keep Your Colours Bright & Vibrant
Keep Single-Colour Tanks: If you want to maintain pure, intense colours (e.g., solid red or deep blue), keep only one colour strain per aquarium.
Cull Wild-Types Early: If you run a Skittles tank, regularly move any offspring showing brown, striped, or clear wild-type traits into a separate display tank before they reach breeding age.
Use Dark Substrates: Dark gravel or soil helps shrimp express their richest, most saturated colors.
Provide a Quality Diet: Feed foods rich in natural carotenoids, spirulina, and botanicals (like Catappa leaves) to support shell pigmentation and healthy moulting.
